Every now and then, paying close attention to the betting markets pays off. Like when I made my first real killing as a youngster by betting on the Tories to win the 1992 general election at odds of 7-1 against. And when I bet on Marco Antonio Barerra beating Naseem Hamed in their major Featherweight World Title clash in 2001. I recall going to the bank over and over, taking as much out as I could afford and throwing it on the fight.
My only regret is that I took a straight up win, rather than a points win, but at odds of 3-1, who'd complain at taking what was in effect a guaranteed, printing money exercise to its natural conclusion?
Today, I am right in the middle of seeing myself pick up a nice pot in a major betting coup. Small stakes this time (tenner spreads), but when I saw BetFair offer odds of nearly 40-1 on Leeds beating United by a goal to nil, and odds of 50-60 to 1 on a score line of 2-1 and 2-2, I couldn't resist. I even have 1-1 covered at a very generous 15-1.
To prove I backed this before the match, here are my comments on Dick Puddlecote's latest piece explaining my actions.
Here is the current score of 0-1.
Why listen to Lawro, when you can listen to us? It may all go sour yet, but my prediction that Leeds would play very well against a lacklustre Man Utd, and that it would be a close game with a very likely narrow Leeds win was hot on the money.
Superb odds, massive value for money, and I'll be laughing my tits off if it comes off. Well, it'll be nice to get something back for my years of patience.

I'll take £400 for a £10 bet on 0-1 thank you!

Excellent punt, JD. Sorry, only just seen that you posted about it here.
Value is the key, and you spotted it brilliantly.
Wish I had seen your comment at mine earlier. :-(
I wish I had time to look for these things, gambling is fun. It is especially fun when you know you will win!
