Here's a question for you.
Why is that Fleet Street and Westminster are so obsessed with Paul 'Wank' Staines, aka 'Guido'? He appears on high profile broadcasts hosted by people like Paxman, he's interviewed on Terrestrial channels, he's given occasional slots in newspaper columns (Guardian, Times) and hacks fawn over him and deride him in varying measures every week.
But, why? The bloke has some connections, and he attacks 'the establishment'. Not especially unique characteristics. He's a great self-publicist and he uses his 'blog' to 'reveal' attack and berate. Except the reality is, his scoops and insights are very few and far between.
He spends most of his blogging time writing very poor quality 'articles', which often say little or nothing at all. Maybe a quip here and there, or something utterly unfunny (meant to show him up in a positive light).
When you boil it down, he's just a piss poor blogger who happens to have money and a few people feeding him info.
Yet he is obsessed over, as though he is this black angel in the shadows, waiting to swoop and take out our evil, corrupt establishment. Journalists dislike him, though they focus on the wrong reasons. They ought to look a little more deeply and study his 'HQ' a little better. For it is there that the Leprechaun bell end pumps out his self-promoting bullshit.
I had a little look earlier, and lo and behold, the place hasn't changed. Look at this piss poor 'article' for example. It's nothing out of the ordinary for Mr Wank. A quick piece about him lounging on a beach and telling the BBC to get lost on the phone. Tosser.
At the time of writing, the article attracted 1,750 'comments' from readers.
'Wow!' you're thinking, 'that's amazing...he must have a lot of readers, he must be good.'
Wrooooonnnng. Most of the comments are from the same people, who post under the most tear-jerkingly boring and puerile pseudonyms I have ever spotted. A hard core base of fans (and the odd plonker troll) who spend their lives on there like a gaggle of bored 13 year olds on MSN chat.
And this is what it is like there, every day. The comments pages reveal the most infantile, puerile, babyish, pathetic, sad, mentally deficient, remedial 'MSN' chat style discussions you'll ever see.
Outside of MSN chat logs belonging to daft 13 year olds that is.
And the mainstream media and MPs actually listen to this bloke? A bloke who writes shit and commands a sturdy following from assorted dick heads who write in text speak and can't formulate proper sentences never mind arguments within sentient discussion.
Take this contribution, for example, written by a tittering, dribbling Guido blog fan named 'thick as a cunt'
"Last warning kiddie fiddler. I’m gonna mod you to death if you don’t bow down to our lord, Gaydo."
Ah-ha! Ah-hahahaha! How hilarious! How witty!
Of course, as usual, a row or two develops on Guido comments sections. Good, healthy arguments? Er, I'm not sure.
For 'tat' levies this beauty at a contributor on the above article's comment's section:
"you are a nobody and I AM TOP BOY! SHUT IT YOU DOPEY SLAG!
we do not tolerate truther morons like you here. you are paranoid nutters.
I understand that atlas caters for that particular type of retard.
please leave this place immediately and take your gay lover 11.06 with you.
thankyou.
what a pair of sp@stics!"
Nice, huh? These are just two comments I've plucked out at random, I'm sure there are far, far worse on old 'MSN - Guido 2.0'.
Of course, at Boaty & D, we don't censor debate, but we certainly challenge any inappropriate and utterly banal and stupid comments from people who make them. We don't delete, as this is morally wrong and not remotely in the spirit of libertarianism, but if people are rude, unfunny and off-topic? Well, see for yourselves - we have some standards here at Boaty & D.
Even if you disagree with that, and you think the standard of debate here leaves a lot to be desired (sometimes it can descend slightly, though not too much), I think we ought to all agree that this bloke punches far and away above his weight on the media scene.
And his blog, and the discussions therein, are beyond pathetic.

i stopped reading his blog sometime ago because it appeared to me much as you say, no real discussion follow-ups. i like your blog, you make me laugh quite a bit with your acerbic observations and the blatent comical to the point of peeing myself laughing self promotion, you (both) write very well but i miss, most everywhere, a point or area to discuss,. discuss properly points of view, observations and the like.
Ah, a Boaty & D 'forum', perhaps? Now there's an idea...
Thanks for the vote de la confidance, Sam. Much appreciated.
Keep coming back to watch us tear folks new arseholes.
regards
JD
Why would you want a libertarian forum when this already exists?
Maybe he wants something a little more...high brow?
Just saying!
:-)
Being bloggers as you are - and I am - it's very easy for such an article as this one to be seen as sour grapes.
I mean, 1750 comments is something I can only dream of and, of course, that means more than that number of hits as not every visitor will leave a comment.
I know I don't ;)
However, as you say, when you really look at Guido's posts and the comments there's quite often not a lot there at all.
Now, fair play to the guy - I wish I could make money through blogging and he does get some inside stuff and scoops through his contacts - but I'm sort of grateful that my blog doesn't attract the sort of attention Guido's often does.
I write my blog to amuse myself, to fulfill an urge to write and to occasionally inform people or make them think.
OK, I don't get that many visitors or that many comments, but I'm happy with what I've got and rather glad that I don't get hundreds of comments that I wouldn't really want in the first place if they're of the general standard of many that I see on his blog.
OK, I don't often see eye-to-eye with Iain Dale but out of an average of about 35 comments per article, I can read the vast majority of them without wanting to take a nice hot shower. I can't say that about the comments on Guido's blog.
So, not sour grapes, but an issue with quality control and a preference for 5 worthwhile comments rather than 500 droolings that wouldn't even enhance a toilet wall.
One more point - given that Guido's blog is the most popular political blog then it's inevitable that it's held up as some sort of benchmark or as being typical in some way.
I don't think it is and I don't think it does blogging many favours when it's viewed that way.
People can still be controversial and influential whilst retaining integrity - Devil's Kitchen springs to mind - and attract frequent but intelligent comment.
Very kind of you, Steve...
DK
I meant it, DK!
I see what you mean John D when talking about the comments on Guido's blog, I find them irksome in the extreme. As for his political content, well he loses me a helluva lot as I think he's more of a nudge nudge, wink wink merchant and leaves me rather cold and out of his 'political' picture.
So why then did I put his blog on the Freedom To Choose blogroll? You've guessed it, it's because when he blogs an item within five minutes there are hundreds of commentators so he must be saying something meaningfull...then you read the comments. I can only bear the first few.
I'll stick to the more personable bloggers like your good selves, DK, Dick Puddlecote, Old Holborn...etc who have more to say about the led than the leaders.

TBY, pissed off cos he cant go to his pub and have a pint and fag, sat at home miserable and smoking his head off while typing shit on his computer and having can or two...hic
JD and I have chatted about this many times and have concluded that the blogging world is changing and in fact is about to change big time.
It deserves an article really but to surmise.
Blogging was born in a world of New Labour. It knows nothing else. In the next few months that world will be a Tory one. Professed Tory blogs such as Dizzy (pretty good) and Guido (shite) will suddenly be on message.
Blogs have also changed. The big two of Dale and Guido are not party sites like Labourlist et al. Yet they are of such a size (despite being crap) that they now rival mainstream media.
They should be treated as such.
The old one for all and all for one blogging approach is now no longer viable at the top level. As soon as bloggers appear in the press and on Newsnight giving their views, they become mainstream.
Is there really, editorially, any difference between Guido/Dale and the News of the World or one of its lead hacks? I'd argue not.
I'm as baffled at the readership of Guido as I am the Express.
"Blogs have also changed. The big two of Dale and Guido are not party sites like Labourlist et al. Yet they are of such a size (despite being crap) that they now rival mainstream media.

Yup. I totally agree.
Remember folks, you read it here first.
Dale and Guido are going to have to spend some time on the back foot methinks...
I love how the two of them spend half their time giving little matey nods to the other, whilst referencing eachother's work and the work of a close knit clique of fellow blogger chums.
All very 'raaah-raaaah' if you ask me. Very chummy and incestuous. I fail to see how any reasonable minded person could read their rubbish and take it seriously. It's banal, it's pathetic...you learn nothing and you are not challenged mentally by reading their articles.
Guido is an up himself opinionated Tory, who pretends to be a cool anti establishment warrior, when he's just a self serving cunt.
Iain Dale writes streams and streams of boring centrist, fence-sitting, turgid junk every day, pumping it out like a pipe pumps sewage into dull, murky estuary. After over 2 years of reading his site, I've yet to come across a piece of his where he states his own opinion on something (where that opinion is strident and different, rather than weak, insipid and pointless).
They ought to be on the back foot, because really, they are shit - whereas this site will rock your headboard and give you mental orgasms. We rock crotches. We give new meaning to the purpose of establish churches.
In time, people will worship us, as our amazing insight into the world will be a beacon, where others are mere tea lights in a blizzard.
I have more time for Dale, however.
At least his blog entries are usually a bit more than a picture of some cunt we always knew was a cunt anyway with a target photoshopped to his forehead and then two sentences - often with typos - announcing something sensational is going to be announced soon...
There's gotta be something in the fact that the only blogs I ever actually click through to the site on and read the comments are DK, Samizdata, the LA and now you guys (I would have started reading you much earlier but i've had rss trouble). I don't even read guido until there's nothing else to read, and I catch up on several days worth at once, just to know what's going on at westminster more than anything.
