Okay, let's get the Michael Jackson story out the way first thing. The guy died during the night aged 50, which is obviously sad no matter what feelings you have for him.
Myself? Well, I was/am much more a Prince fan if anything. A musician bordering on genius, a much under-rated guitarist and also a prolific songwriter; not to mention the full on sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Michael Jackson was none of these things. A superb, awesome performer with a great voice and an eye for the theatrical yes, but much more reliant on others.
This is why I just don't put him on the same level of the other two previous idols of their time: The Beatles and Elvis. The Beatles need no argument from me, but Elvis, although he didn't write songs as such, did play. He took himself and his guitar and cut that demo, won that deal, made that career.
I've always though of Jackson as more of a Sinatra in many ways, of his era of course. Someone who had it all, a burning charisma and a voice and presence that made people stand up and scream. But a performer all the same.
There is a man that is always forgotten. This morning, and in the coming weeks, one man's name will not be mentioned. Quincy Jones will get due credit for basically making Michael Jackson what he was, but someone else will be cast adrift.
That man is Rod Temperton.
Heard of him? Thought not.
This bloke is from Cleethorpes like some eighties film. In fact everything about him is straight from an eighties small town boy made good movie. And did he make it good. His songwriting credits are on another planet, there is some rubbish, but there are also some massive songs.
He wrote 'Boogie nights' and 'Always and forever' for his own band, but that isn't his greatest moment.
Oh no. Because it was him, Jones and Jackson that came up with 'Off the wall', which he also wrote the two biggest hits for, the title track and 'Rock with you'. They brought him back for 'Thriller' for which he wrote 'The lady in my life' and 'Baby be mine'. Then he wrote 'Thriller'.
And that's it really. He wrote the title track for the biggest selling album of all time, although not a number one it was the song (and video of course) that launched Michael Jackson into megastardom. And he never gets mentioned for it. He even picked Vincent Price for the speaking part, which he wrote in a cab on the way to the studio.
Any songwriter will tell you that without the performer the song is worthless. Michael Jackson made those songs what they were and they wouldn't have been what they are if done by someone else. But the performer, equally, needs the songs. Jackson did, of course, write some superb records, but it was 'Thriller' that turned him from a big selling world famous star into the biggest thing on the planet for the next ten years.
In years to come it will be the music that is remembered rather than the allegations and freak show lifestyle. And the people who made and wrote that music should be equally remembered. Rod Temperton from Cleethorpes should be near the top of that list.
"Even at home, I'm lonely. I sit in my room sometimes and cry. It's so hard to make friends ... I sometimes walk around the neighborhood at night, just hoping to find someone to talk to. But I just end up coming home."
Michael Jackson

God-DAMN! Good find, KB!
I just love the way this geek from Cleethorpes became a funk legend.
Tell me this, can you imagine him on stage dressed all Earth Wind and Fire?
Neither can I.
I personally think his Heatwave stuff was much better...
Also you can find great Heatwave live stuff from 70s on Youtube with Rod on keys... great stuff
Heatwave are weird, we all know the songs but not many know who the hell sings them.
I feel sorry for him really, he should have an OBE or something from this country, but he is just unknown
I know his uncle!
Used to be a caretaker at a school I taught at - nice guy. Helped us move house.
No Temperton - no Thriller - and we possibly wouldn't be talking about the World mourning...
Heatwave's 'Boogie Nights' has the best introduction to any pop record ever - fact.
I've always thought the bass line for Boogie was very similar to that of Changeling by the Doors.
Good, but you make Templeton sound like a loser. He has made a LOT of money out of composing. Which of course he should have. See this

Where you'll find " One problem was finding him. His home is in Los Angeles but he also has properties in the south of France, Switzerland, and Kent and owns an island off Fiji. And they are just the ones they know about..."
Here's my blog on MJ.
Actually, he comes from Market Rasen, abou 20 miles from Cleethorpes!
He is awesome! I have loved so many of his songs! What a prolific writer! Thanks for giving him credit for his contributions!!
Thanks for an excellent article. I was very aware of this guy during the '80s. I love his writing. And you're right, Michael Jackson wouldn't be quite the same without the Rod Temperton tunes he was able to sing.
Right before Thriller was released, I was half of a duo (the piano-player half) with the sister of Gary (Dream Weaver) Wright. We were playing in a small, upscale nightclub in LA. MJ came in with a small entourage. During our break, he previewed a few tunes that no one had heard yet (from Thriller). It was just MJ singing and accompanying himself. I thought he played pretty good piano, a surprise. It's something I'll always remember. He hung around for most of the night.
I first saw Rob in the picture you posted above, when I bought what is still one of my favorite albums as a 14 year old in
1977/78. Thought he was a cutie and loved his songs. Then he went on to work with Michael Jackson and so many others and I respected his talent even more. Thank you so much for bringing him a bit to the forefront, he's been overlooked for way too long. I wish he had a website so I could send him an e-mail and tell him I've been a huge fan of his for over 30 years.

Sorry for the typo in my e-mail above, I meant ROD, not Rob. It's getting late in the work day and I'm getting tired, LOL.
Central Heating...the best Heatwave LP ever. Rod is the Star of the Story.
Speaking of Gary Wright, his song "Love is Alive" was a big fav of mine back then too.

I thank Susan and other contributors for their valued and positive posts.

This post is myopic and not even well-researched. Excuse me, Michael Jackson wasn't a prolific songwriter or even a musician "bordering on genius?" Quincy Jones begs to differ. He said Jackson was an "incredible" songwriter. Temperton was an awesome addition to Michael Jackson's team but don't forget that it was Jackson who wrote Billie Jean, Wanna Be Startin' Something, and Beat It on Thriller, which were all bigger hits than the three Temperton wrote on that album. And what's so noble about the "full-on sex, drugs and rock-and-roll lifestyle"? As lame as you may think it is, many of us find Jackson's spirituality, concern for the betterment of mankind, charity work, and quiet life as a good father far more admirable than fitting some poser's definition of cool.
This article is nonsense......the things michael was doing, prince hasn't got a cent on it.......prince has the ability to play all instruments, but that doesn't make him better then Michael......Michael was doing everything but playing all instrument( who cares) MJ was a Songwriter, Dancer, Choreography, Producer etc...give me a artist that u know of that does all these things.
Yes thiller was a hit, but Beat it( written by mj) was a hit also ( also had written some hits from Off the wall).
Mj was not a man that had to rely on others, he was well fully able to write hits on his own, you only have to look at his history and you'll see that most of his hits was written by him.
So what are you trying to say, that elvis was better then mj because even tho Elvis didnt write none of his songs, he was playing instrument and performing( which Mj was doing( dance routines etc) so what im getting from you is that the Elvis hype was blown out of proportion, because to me, elvis wouldnt be elvis without the song-writers, where else with Mj, he was writing music and doing his thing from the Jacksons day and most of the hits the Jacksons had, they were mostly written by Mj.
well another bull shit blog 2 atempt to bring down mj u just sed if it wasnt for thriler with temperton mj wouldnt be mj u must no nuthin abt music ohnestly mj would be as big because he also wrote alot of hits i agree what the dude sed so elvis is nothin cuz sum1 wrote his hits get out fo here give credit where its due it was billie jean that sealed michael jackson status as king of pop!!! if there was no thriller mj would be jus as big trust me have u heard the tracks on BAD? and the jacksons stuff listen to This Place Hotel then come bk and write a blog on hw wrong you where.
